16-year-old drowns in Lake Norman; body recovered after search

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A 16-year-old boy drowned in Lake Norman near Mooresville on Thursday afternoon, prompting a search and recovery operation by local authorities.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the drowning just before 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Deputies learned that the teen, later identified as Kaleb Lamar Shields, had been swimming and did not return to the surface.

Upon arrival, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Lake Patrol Unit utilized sonar equipment and a remotely operated vehicle to assist in the search for Shields.

Multiple local fire agencies and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission also participated in the effort.

The search concluded just before 6:45 p.m. when the ROV located Shields’ body underwater. The body was subsequently recovered and transported to shore.

Sheriff Campbell expressed condolences, stating, “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young individual whose life was lost today.”
